    Scrubs renewal possible?

    2009 - 04.28

Although many of its familiar cast members may move on, ABC is seriously considering picking up Bill Lawrence’s comedy, Scrubs, for a ninth season – a possible second season on ABC after seven seasons on NBC. The network’s in-house studio, ABC Studios, produces the veteran comedy and with the likely exits of Zach Braff, Judy Reyes and probably more, the costs of production are sure to go down.

Of course, a renewed Scrubs could benefit from its new lease on life by focusing on the inexperienced interns introduced this season, which would return the show back to the roots of its comedy core: inexperienced doctors learning what medicine is all about. While the cast exit could make Scrubs: The Next Generation seem like a comedy on the best diet pills, it could also move on to produce a second generation of stars.

The real question is whether the show can hold its core audience without Braff and company around to anchor it.

Matthew Perry equals Zac Efron plus 20-some years?

    2009 - 04.20

When Zac Efron grows up, he wants to be Matthew Perry. Or can’t avoid it. Or something. Either way, Efron’s latest comedy has Perry shrinking down to Efron in a very Big/Vice Versa/Freaky Friday sort of way. The good-natured comedy might have already been done in a zillion variations, but the basic plot concept still has firepower at the box office, as the flick drew a respectable $24 million over its opening weekend.

That was followed by State of Play with $14 million, while Monsters and Aliens, Hannah Montana the Movie, and Fast and Furious all lingered somewhere in the $12 million range to round out the top five. The heavily-promoted dark comedy, Crank: High Voltage, was about as appealing to moviegoers as a triple-dose of Colonix, which drew only $6.5 million to take a very distant sixth place in its debut weekend.

Next weekend should be better, with the thriller Obsessed looking set to dominate, but the real start of the summer movie season comes on May 1, when X-Men Origins: Wolverine debuts, followed a week later by the J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek. Those are the ones I’m waiting for!

Next Food Network Star to return!

    2009 - 04.20

I’ve been a fan of Next Food Network Star since season one, when it was called, The Next Iron Chef. So I was happy to post this press release for Food Network when they asked:

NEW YORK – APRIL 7, 2009 – The stakes are higher than ever when The Next Food Network Star returns this summer with a star-studded fifth season on Food Network. As television’s most challenging food fight, the series provides 10 hopeful TV chefs the chance to compete for the ultimate dream job: his or her own Food Network show. Iron Chef Bobby Flay leads the selection committee that ultimately decides the winner’s fate and launches one lucky man or woman into a food and television celebrity. The series kicks off on Sunday, June 7th at 9pm ET/PT as the finalists cater Food Network’s “Sweet 16” party with network talent and media there to judge.

“This season we’ve created the biggest and toughest challenges the show has ever seen,” said Bob Tuschman, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production. “We have an incredibly competitive group of finalists who are hungry to become Food Network stars, and they all came to win.”

The 10 finalists include: Brett August (Washington Heights, N.Y.), Katie Cavuto (Philadelphia, Pa.), Melissa d’Arabian (Keller, Texas), Teddy Folkman (Alexandria, Va.), Eddie Gilbert (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Jen Isham (Orlando, Fla.), Debbie Lee (West Hollywood, Calif.), Jamika Pessoa (Atlanta, Ga.), Michael Proietti (New York, N.Y.) and Jeffrey Saad (Los Angeles, Calif.).

This season’s finalists must prove their culinary expertise and star potential through a series of complex challenges. In each episode, their cooking chops will be put to the test to see who can handle the pressure and present the most mouth-watering food. Challenges include catering a party for a roomful of Food Network stars, impressing the “Barefoot Contessa” herself in the Hamptons and preparing a comforting meal for returning soldiers on the Intrepid Sea , Air, and Space Museum . The show also flies to sunny Miami – for the first time – where the finalists must survive a beachside wood-grilling challenge for Red Lobster and create a delicious dinner for a group of culinary elite at a screening of Columbia Pictures’ movie Julie & Julia (in theaters August 7). Throughout the season, they will also have to prove they have star quality and dazzle a variety of media outlets with their personalities, including Access Hollywood, Good Housekeeping, Esquire, Food Network Magazine, and USA WEEKEND.

Rachael Ray, Giada De Laurentiis, Alton Brown, Guy Fieri, Ina Garten, Emeril Lagasse, Gina and Pat Neely, Masaharu Morimoto, Ted Allen, Tyler Florence, Michael Symon and the season four winner, Aaron McCargo, Jr., will appear throughout the season to help guide the finalists through the challenges. The selection committee comprised of Flay and Food Network executives, Bob Tuschman (Senior Vice President, Programming and Production) and Susie Fogelson (Vice President, Marketing and Brand Strategy), will narrow the field down until the finale. The winner will be revealed during the series finale on Sunday, August 2nd at 9pm ET/PT, and he or she will receive a six-episode show that will premiere in August 2009. The Next Food Network Star is produced by CBS EYE too Productions.

    Hannah Montana bullies Vin Diesel

    2009 - 04.14

A teenage girl can rough up Vin Diesel. Want proof? Check out this past weekend’s box office results. With Diesel’s Fast and Furious right at the Frontline of the competition, Hannah Montana the Movie came in and witch-slapped Diesel right out of the top box office spot, drawing a tune of $32.3 million to carry the weekend.

By comparison, Fast and Furious lacked nitro enough to keep it close, drawing only $27.2 million. And in a surprise move, family animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens held tight to third with a surprisingly strong $21.8 million to take third, while freshman-week comedy Observe and Report came in a distant fourth place, drawing only $11 million on the weekend. The disappointing debut was not unexpected considering the film’s R rating, but certainly put a damper on Seth Rogan’s rep as a bankable draw.

Fast and Furious overtakes Monsters and Aliens

    2009 - 04.06

The Vin Diesel return to the Fast and Furious franchise turbo-powered the action flick to the top of the box office by far this weekend, hauling in an impressive-for-April $72.5 million in its debut weekend. That’s raking in money faster than Lipovox burns fat!

Last week’s big’un, Monsters vs. Aliens, stayed strong in Fast and Furious’ dust, bringing in $33.5 million, which isn’t bad after its monstrous debut last weekend. Nothing else topped $10 million, although in its second week, A Haunting In Connecticut came close, drawing $9.5 million to take third place.

Knowing and I Love You, Man rounded out the top five, beating out the other major new release this past weekend, Adventureland, which only managed $6 million for sixth place.
