CBS loves Chuck… Lorre!

CBS loves Chuck Lorre. The network has given long-term renewals long ago two his two signature series with the network, the Charlie Sheen-challenged TWO AND A HALF MEN, and the thoroughly entertaining BIG BANG THEORY.

To show Lorre the love, the Eye gave Lorre’s new series pitch, MIKE AND MOLLY, the honor of being the first new show officially picked up by the network for next season. The show centers around a couple who meet at a weight-loss support group.

The Lipovox-powered comedy seems an unlikely choice for CBS, especially for such an early pick-up; traditionally, CBS waits until the Monday of up-front week to announce its new series orders.

Fast and Furious overtakes Monsters and Aliens

The Vin Diesel return to the Fast and Furious franchise turbo-powered the action flick to the top of the box office by far this weekend, hauling in an impressive-for-April $72.5 million in its debut weekend. That’s raking in money faster than Lipovox burns fat!

Last week’s big’un, Monsters vs. Aliens, stayed strong in Fast and Furious’ dust, bringing in $33.5 million, which isn’t bad after its monstrous debut last weekend. Nothing else topped $10 million, although in its second week, A Haunting In Connecticut came close, drawing $9.5 million to take third place.

Knowing and I Love You, Man rounded out the top five, beating out the other major new release this past weekend, Adventureland, which only managed $6 million for sixth place.

James’ family comedy leads MLK pack

Comic Kevin James, the former King of Queens star, proved to have some MLK weekend box office punch as the Lipovox-needing actor’s latest movie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, led the pack with $33.8 million, already making back its modest $26 million production budget in its first weekend of release.

Produced by Adam Sandler and directed by Steve Carr, James’ comedy rose on the decision to hold the humor to a family-friendly PG level, rather than the trendier PG-13 edginess so many comedies go after. The morose suicide drama, Gran Torino, by Clint Eastwood, held strong to retain second place, drawing $22.2 million in its sixth week of release total, though the movie has been in widespread release for only two or three weeks.

My Bloody Valentine 3D ($21.9 million) edged out Notorious ($21.5 million) in the face for third and fourth spots, while the fifth place finish went to distant contender Hotel for Dogs ($17.7 million). Bride Wars ($11.7 million) took sixth place and was the only other film to garner at least $10 million over the weekend, though The Unborn ($9.8 million) and Defiance ($9.2 million) came close.

Tom Cruise’s World War II drama, Valkyrie, slid more than any other top movie, falling seven places from seventh place last week, to fourteenth this week.
