Fast and Furious overtakes Monsters and Aliens

The Vin Diesel return to the Fast and Furious franchise turbo-powered the action flick to the top of the box office by far this weekend, hauling in an impressive-for-April $72.5 million in its debut weekend. That’s raking in money faster than Lipovox burns fat!

Last week’s big’un, Monsters vs. Aliens, stayed strong in Fast and Furious’ dust, bringing in $33.5 million, which isn’t bad after its monstrous debut last weekend. Nothing else topped $10 million, although in its second week, A Haunting In Connecticut came close, drawing $9.5 million to take third place.

Knowing and I Love You, Man rounded out the top five, beating out the other major new release this past weekend, Adventureland, which only managed $6 million for sixth place.

Monsters vs. Aliens destroys them all!

An animated kids’ movie filled more Berkline seats in movie theaters nationwide than anything else, by far. Monsters vs. Aliens drew an incredible $58.2 million in its first week of release.

That’s more than twice the amount for fellow first-week release contender “A Haunting In Connecticut,” which only managed $23.0 million in finishing second place on the weekend. Knowing drew $14.7 million in its second week, while I Love You, Man drew $12.6 million to round out the Top 4 spots. Everything else drew less than $10 million.

And in their first direct face-off outside a wrestling ring, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s family-friendly “Race to Witch Mountain” drew $5.6 million in its third week of release, besting John Cena’s second feature film, “12 Rounds,” a family-unfriendly action flick, which drew only $5.3 million in its initial debut on the big screen. The Rock’s film already has drawn $53.0 million in box office, a total 12 Rounds is unlikely to match during its entire run. The two films finished sixth and seventh at the box office, respectively.
