Alice still on top; nothing else thrills

The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp version of Alice in Wonderful, which benefits from many 3D showings and the resultant higher ticket price, stayed on top of the US box office for its second week in release. The film drew a whopping $62.0 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $208.6 million, which places the $200 million picture firmly in the black. Add in another $221 million in foreign markets and you have an impressive $429 million in worldwide box office in only ten days.

Impressive. But little else was, this weekend.

The highly touted Green Zone failed to impress, raking on a mere $14.5 million in its opening weekend; that was good enough for second place, but unless the film develops legs on good word of mouth, it could be hard for even DVD and Blu-Ray sales to rescue this disaster, since Green Zone cost $100 million to make.

The “foul-mouthed John Hughes-esque” film, “She’s Out Of My League” debuted strong enough to take third place with virtually no big name stars, drawing $9.6 million; however, with a slim $20 million budget, a respectable four-week run ought to put this one in the black. Ditto the fourth-place flick, Remember Me, which drew $8.3 million against a $16 million budget. Shutter Island fell to fifth place, close behind Remember Me.

Our Family Wedding drew a strong $7.6 million in its opening bow, despite playing on half as many screens as most of the other films above it.

Next week doesn’t look all that impressive with The Bounty Hunter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Repo Men all looking only moderately interesting. Far more enthralling will be the weekend of March 26, when highly anticipated comedy Hot Tub Time Machine and interesting-looking family flick How To Train Your Dragon both look like they have potential to do big numbers.

Hope so, because some of the films taking up screens at the moment are less interesting than a Western General auto insurance review.
